Before business began to heat up for the evening, Drew McLeod emerged from the kitchen of his new Tallahassee restaurant in a chef coat.

One patch on the white garment trumpeted the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Educational Foundation. On the left breast, his name appeared in cursive, followed by “DGC,” all official looking and everything.

“I’m a certified Darn Good Cook,” McLeod said with a laugh.

Though not a certified chef, he believes he’s really cooking as owner of Savour, among the latest to join the Capital City’s growing downtown upscale dining scene.

Savour Executive Chef Ashley Mayo

Fine dining restaurant Savour located in downtown Tallahassee has named 23-year-old Ashley Mayo as the eatery's new executive chef.

"It's a blessing I didn't think I would (have) where I'm at, at 23," Mayo said in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat.

Savour, owned by revered entrepreneur Drew McLeod, has been distinguished by several accolades, such as a six-time OpenTable "Diners' Choice" award winner, making it a widely recognized dining destination.

OpenTable's site says that these award-winning restaurants are known to "serve up creative dishes, unparalleled hospitality, and one-of-a-kind dining experiences for all occasions."

All of those things are made possible with the 'heart of the house' – the kitchen.

"I've always said that my legacy as a restaurateur, as an entrepreneur, is in the success of those that I've had the privilege of working with. She's a special talent," McLeod said. "To see people grow and prosper in the thing that they love the most is a joy to watch."

Menu items complement the flavor profiles of their dishes with ingredients from specialty farms like Play of Sunlight Mushrooms and Legacy Greens. They work closely with Executive Chef Ashley Mayo and the establishment’s prep team, led by Dee Rauh, to provide new and interesting offerings emphasizing “Fresh From Florida” products as much as possible. They also lean into “Fresh From Florida” award-winning Chef Justin Timineri’s insights and recipes to help come up with fresh ideas for the restaurant.

“As a lifelong Florida resident and 48-year hospitality industry veteran, I am proud to support the ‘Fresh From Florida’ campaign,” McLeod says.

I've known Drew for many years through community connections and events in the non-profit association world, as well as Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce and other community events. A consummate businessman, mover and shaker, long-time restaurateur, and real southern gentleman, it was our pleasure to dine at his newest creation, Savour recently, as well as meet his gracious hostess and lovely wife.

Experience. People matter and as a guest at Savour I could immediately tell. That's their secret. In a time where service is a fleeting thought, Savour is here to save us. It was a pleasure speaking with the owners, Kim and Drew, I could tell they had a passion for hospitality. Kim had introduced Carson, my server, when I was seated and she let me know I was in capable hands. He was an amazing. I overheard his suggestions to guests and he was always spot on. I had to let him know how good he was doing and he let me in on something. He loves to work their! In fact, everyone was happy. When I asked him what the secret was he said the leadership, professional staff, and no drama. That sounds like a winning combination to me. I bet you are wondering how the food was. In Tallahassee can we get great food and great service? Yes, we can. BBQ shrimp was phenomenal. The shining star was the chargrilled filet mignon. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Chef Ashley runs a great kitchen! There is a bar area and multiple dining atmospheres. They all feel part of the same world, but intimate. Reserve on open table or try your chances. Tip well!

Our Go to for special occasions. Had the surf and turf tonight even though I’m an avid believer in not getting steak from Resturants, and wow, probably the best steak I have ever had. Will continue to come back and encourage anyone reading this to try it, you’re missing out!!! 10/5 stars I wish I could rate higher.

My husband and I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant. I took my husband here for his birthday in December, and it was one of the best nights of our lives celebrating - so much so that when my birthday came around this past weekend, my husband scoured Tallahassee for a new spot to take me to but kept coming back to Savour because of the night we had had in December. We had Carson both times as our waiter, and I just have to say that he is absolutely fantastic. The entire staff feel like our friends now, and Kim and Drew standing at the door to greet you feels like you’re entering their own home. All of this and I haven’t even mentioned the food yet, which is just wonderful - classics with an elevated feel and I always wish we had ordered more of the truffle Mac to take home. Not to mention, the cocktails are some of the best in the city, some are even better than those we had while we lived in DC, and trust me that is saying something!! We will be back again and again. One of the most special restaurants we’ve ever been to.
